The Ficus longifolia, also known as the ficus Alli or ficus sabatooth , is a species of fig tree known for its distinctive long, narrow leaves and attractive, bushy appearance. It's an excellent plant for both indoor and outdoor spaces, though it’s more commonly kept indoors as a houseplant.
Description:
- Leaves: As the name suggests, the leaves are long and slender, typically dark green, and can grow up to 6-8 inches long. They are glossy, leathery, and slightly wavy around the edges.
- Growth Habit: It’s a slow-growing tree that can reach a height of around 4-6 feet indoors, and much taller in the wild or when grown in larger outdoor spaces. In nature, it’s often found as a shrub or small tree.
- Care Tips:
- Light: Ficus longifolia thrives in bright, indirect light. Too little light can cause the plant to become leggy, while direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. A spot near a window with filtered light is ideal.
- Watering: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can cause root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), you may need to water more often, but during the dormant months (fall and winter), watering can be reduced.
- Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). It is sensitive to sudden temperature changes or drafts, so avoid placing it near air conditioners, heaters, or open windows during cold months.
- Soil: Well-draining, loamy potting soil is best. A mix designed for houseplants or a cactus mix will work well, as long as it drains properly.
-
Fertilizing: Fertilize the plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer about once a month during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is in a dormant phase.
- With proper care, your Ficus longifolia can thrive and add a unique, leafy charm to your indoor space!
